What Job Seekers Should Know Before Working Abroad

If you are skilled in a profession that is needed by Russia’s businesses (oil companies require welders, building companies need crane operators, and manufacturing companies want people who know how to operate machinery), there are job opportunities in Russia that come with large salaries, tax benefits, and opportunities for advancement.

DBS Group has been successfully assisting skilled job seekers from around the world obtain jobs in Russia for many decades. We have placed over 2,500 people and have maintained a 93% retention rate after 1 year of placement.  In assisting with your placement, we will test your skills, prepare the necessary documentation, educate you on Russian work culture, and provide assistance from the time of your application until you arrive at your place of employment.

The remainder of this guide will give you the information required for preparing for working in the Russian workplace, and information that will assist you in understanding how to effectively work in Russia using the DBS Group processes.

Preparing for International Employment

Your Russian job starts with proven skills and perfect documents. Russian employers test abilities thoroughly and check papers carefully. Proper preparation brings job offers fast.

Skill Requirements

All companies in Russia require some form of physical proof of skills prior to hiring you. For example, an oil company will test a candidate's ability to weld under the climatic conditions of Siberia, a construction company will test your ability to operate a crane and lift five-ton loads, or an information technology company may test your ability to write code under time constraints or to remove software bugs. Finally, manufacturing companies will test your ability to operate a piece of machinery in a safe and efficient manner while at the same time applying their respective production pressures.

DBS Group operates trade test centres in India, Vietnam, the  Philippines, and Indonesia, where you will perform welding on actual pipe within a specified time frame, operate a crane while lifting an actual five-ton load, and provide proof of your ability to perform the skills required of that job before beginning employment. According to Ms Ruby Mazumdar, the Regional Director of DBS Group with over 15 years of experience, "Having proven skills will guarantee fast employment in Russia. Our trade tests are designed to match the exact requirements of the job you are applying for".

Most Russian jobs need basic English plus 50 Russian safety phrases. Oil sites require "Стоп! Опасно!" (Stop! Danger!). Construction crews learn "Где инструмент?" (Where's the tool?). DBS Group provides free language training focused on workplace communication.

Renew certifications before applying. Welding certificates expire after two years. Crane licenses need current stamps. Safety training must show recent dates. DBS Group verifies which Russian regions accept your qualifications.

Documentation Checklist

To ensure visa support, you should have all necessary documentation prior to submitting your application. Incomplete applications will be denied. The recommended time frame to ensure preparation of all documents is 6 months. Required documentation:

  • A passport valid for 6 months or more after a Russian company hires you
  • Notarised skills certificates
  • Medical clearance (TB-free and HIV-free from acceptable medical clinics)
  • Police check (Last 5 years clean record)
  • Bank statements (6 months to demonstrate financial ability to support yourself)
  • Attested educational diplomas

Understanding Work Culture Abroad

Discipline is required at work in Russia. Hierarchy is heavily enforced. The way in which Russians communicate, how they structure time, and what their expectations are. Learning the Russian work ethic will put you ahead of the competition from day one.

Cultural Differences

In Russia, there is a definite hierarchy in Russian work environments. For example, you have to refer to your supervisor as “Так точно”, which roughly translates to “yes, sir.” You should arrive at work at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time. You should never publicly question a supervisor's orders. While working on a construction project in Russia, casual conversation is not allowed. They want to keep the site clean and free of disruption, so they only allow conversations during break time.

Occupational safety is a number one priority in Russia at all times. Every day before workers begin working, they are required to participate in a toolbox talk. Workers must use full-length PPE (personal protective equipment). No shortcuts are permitted everywhere on the job. All supervisors personally check their employees' work.

Teamwork in Russia does follow the traditional chain of command. Only supervisors give their workers tasks, and the workers must perform their tasks exactly as the supervisor gives them. If a worker has a suggestion to improve their job, they must provide that information through the proper channels. Employees will get promoted more quickly when there is a mutual respect established between the employee and supervisor.

Preparation for the Weather

  • Siberia = Temperatures of -40 C and a lot of snow gear must be worn.
  • Arctic oil = 24 hours of darkness, whichmeans workers will wear plenty of thermal layers.
  • Moscow = Temperatures of -20 C and insulated boots will be worn.

DBS Group will provide its employees with a survival kit. This kit will include thermal clothing, a hydration system, and the training needed to survive in cold weather.

Employment Expectations

Review Russian contracts closely. What are the monthly salaries, overtime rates, rotation schedules, and end-of-service benefits?

Typical Russian schedules:

  • Oil Rigs - 30/30 rotation (30 on for 30 off)
  • Construction jobs - 12 hours on for six days per week
  • Manufacturing - 10 hours continuously

Very strictly monitored productivity. Daily logs of outputs, weekly supervisor evaluations, and monthly targets. If met, will get bonuses.

Health Insurance provided by the company will cover all work-related injuries. You must maintain the organisation of your medical records and report work-related accidents to your supervisor immediately. You should be following safety protocols.
